Schmidt Bros. Inc. was established as a grain, vegetable and livestock operation in 1937 by Lawrence and Hilda Schmidt. In 1941, Robert and Paul Schmidt continued the business. Today, there are 4 managing partners, 20 full-time employees and 85 seasonal employees.
Currently, there are 14 acres of greenhouses, which are part of a 700 acre farm. The first greenhouse was built in 1951 and was used to grow transplants for our outdoor vegetable operation. In 1961, we started growing bedding plants. Today, we wholesale bedding plants, hanging baskets, patio planters, mums, fall pansies and poinsettias. Our customers are independent garden centers, farm markets and wholesale growers. We offer a wide variety of plant material in unique packaging to enable our customers to be successful in today’s highly competitive market.
In 2005, we launched a new brand of herbs and veggies called Homegrown Gourmet™. This fast-growing line of herbs and veggies includes over 100 varieties of delicious, easy-to-grow plants, including several heirloom varieties and All-America Selections winners. Our Homegrown Gourmet™ website offers growing information for consumers as well as a store locator guide to help consumers find a store nearby.
We are also a Gold Key Grower for the popular Proven Winners® brand of flowers. We grow these plants in 4.5″ pots, gallon pots and hanging baskets. We also grow some of the Simply Beautiful® and Wave™ Petunia brands of flowers. All of these various brands have been very successful for our Retail Customers.
Recently, we were selected as a grower for Master Nursery’s Retail Garden Centers. We are one of only a few quality growers contracted to grow and distribute the Garden Elements™ brand of flowers to their nursery members.
